WASHINGTON – In honor of Earth Day and the rising priority that consumers and responsible corporate citizens are placing on the health of our planet, NextGenWeb.org is highlighting sustainability issues for the week of April 21st. Broadband can help consumers play a critical role in ensuring a healthier planet by helping to reduce greenhouse gases and other simple eco-conscious initiatives.
To promote ways individuals can take advantage of broadband technology to reduce their carbon footprints, NextGenWeb features 10 Ways Broadband Can Help Change the World. Examples include:
- E-shop ‘til you drop: E-commerce generates 36% less conventional air pollutants, 23% less hazardous waste and 9% fewer greenhouse gases.
- Swap freeway time for family time: Telecommuting can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 600 million tons over 10 years, saving 44 billion gallons of gas.
- Give your PC some ZZZZs: Turn off your computer and peripherals at night, over the weekend and especially for extended absences. And, select eco-friendly Energy Star power management features. Hint: According to the Department of Energy, the popular belief that turning your computer on and off shortens its lifespan is a myth.

Broadband Applications Credited For Helping to Reduce Crime
WASHINGTON DC – NextGenWeb.org today posted an exclusive podcast interview with Mayor Graham Richard of Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
When Mayor Richard ran for office in 2000, he quickly recognized the powerful improvements high-speed Internet would bring to all sectors of the community- economic, health, education and public safety. Early in his administration, Mayor Richard formed a team dedicated to incorporating technology into the community’s public safety programs. In a few short years, this task force has created a highly mobile and efficient first responder community.
These initiatives created through the use of broadband technology have lowered crime in the Ft. Wayne area to the lowest level in 27 years. Since 2001, the community has had a steady decrease in the crime rate. This year Ft. Wayne experienced a 5.5% decline.
NextGenWeb Looks at How Broadband Helps Reduce Energy Consumption
Blog launches “Broadband is Green” Feature Section
WASHINGTON DC – NextGenWeb.org today launched a new “Broadband is Green” section with an exclusive post on the recent roundtable discussion on the release of “Broadband Services: Economic and Environmental Benefits,” a study co-authored by Steve Pociask, the president of the American Consumer Institute and Joseph Fuhr Jr., a Professor of Economics at Widener University. Their study shows how the wide adoption and use of broadband applications could achieve a net reduction of 1 billion tons of greenhouse gas over 10 years, which, if converted into energy saved, would constitute 11% of annual U.S. oil imports.

Space Discusses Broadband Initiatives in 2007 Farm Bill
WASHINGTON DC – NextGenWeb.org today posted an exclusive video-cast interview with Representative Zack Space (D-OH) who recently introduced legislation to help spur broadband deployment and investment in rural communities. In the interview, Space outlines the urgent need for the broadband loan amendment he offered to the 2007 Farm Bill to help increase broadband access in his district and other rural areas. Space’s amendment would cut paper work, reform loan security requirements and provide better oversight for the Rural Utility Service broadband loan program. The Farm Bill and the Space amendment were passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in July.
When asked how broadband access can change how manufacturers conduct business in his district, Representative Space explained “broadband is not a passing fad. If you’re a company looking to locate a facility somewhere one of the first things you look to is the access and the quality of broadband in the area. Clearly, there are significant economic benefits to the people of rural America to have broadband access. But it’s more than an economic issue; it’s a quality of life issue. Because of the benefits associated with telemedicine, it’s a healthcare issue. Because of the benefits of distance learning, it’s an educational issue. It’s a security issue with respect to coordinating first responders in a given area.?
Congressman Space was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2006 and represents Ohio’s 18th Congressional District.

NextGenWeb Chats With Agriculture Undersecretary Dorr About Broadband in Rural America

Discusses Rural Utility Service Deployment Initiatives in Farm Bill
BOSTON – NextGenWeb.org today posted an exclusive video-cast interview with Thomas C. Dorr, Undersecretary for Rural Development at the Department of Agriculture. Dorr, the lead speaker on the “Bringing Broadband to Rural America? panel at the National Conference of State Legislators annual meeting in Boston outlined the Department’s views on how broadband access will improve life in rural America.
In the interview, the Under Secretary discusses various USDA broadband initiatives being pursued in this year’s Farm Bill. Dorr shares the three primary goals of the Department: first, to simplify the administrative process for ISPs in rural areas applying for loans; second, to direct loans to particularly underserved areas; and third, to create and enhance the quality of incentives to encourage the expansion of these services.
When asked if increased education on broadband applications like telemedicine and distance learning will boost the demand for services in rural America, Dorr says that “most rural Americans are already educated to the potential opportunities and benefits [of broadband]. As we better utilize and find the technology for health care, for education, for public safety, environmental monitoring and a number of other issues, we’re going to find out that people are very innovative in rural areas. This technology will make it possible for these Americans to live locally and compete globally.?
Dorr joined USDA in 2001 and was appointed to be Under Secretary for Rural Development in 2002.

Former NTIA Chair and current Co-Chair of the Internet Innovation Alliance Chats with NextGenWeb
WASHINGTON, DC – NextGenWeb.org today posted an exclusive video-cast interview with Larry Irving, former NTIA Assistant Secretary under President Clinton and current co-chair of the Internet Innovation Alliance.
In the interview, Irving discusses recent trends for increasing broadband penetration and usage. “New applications are making people more and more excited about broadband,? Irving says. “The killer application for this new generation of Internet is video.? Video capabilities along with lower prices, Irving argues, also help to increase broadband penetration in minority communities. A recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project shows that broadband usage among African-Americans now stands at 42 percent, up from 15 percent just two years ago.
When asked about the life-improving applications associated with broadband usage, Irving talked about the positive effects telecommuting could have on the environment through diminished carbon monoxide emissions. In addition, he discussed the upcoming retirements of the baby boomer generation and pointed to significant savings in healthcare through the use of telemedicine. Finally, Irving touted the educational benefits associated with broadband saying, “Geographic location will no longer be a barrier. Kids anywhere can have access to the best education and the best teachers through distance learning offered over broadband Internet connections.?
Irving, co-founder of the Internet Innovation Alliance, is also President and CEO of the Irving Information Group, a consulting firm providing strategic advice and assistance to international telecommunications and technology companies, technology and media startups and foundations and non-profit organizations.
